Ben Chapman today opened the Radiodays Europe Podcast Day in Copenhagen, Denmark, sharing what the BBC is doing in the podcast space. He shared his and the BBCs opportunities in podcasting spliting the areas of podcasting into four; ‘Funny Quirky & Odd’, Dramatic Storytelling, Explaining & Discovering and Sub and Pop Culture.
"On-demand is changing expectations...allowing listeners to discover content they are interested in...we need to get better at discovery".
One of the key areas he described was answering audience needs especially looking at younger audiences and their need to connection socially. Interesting the BBC has found that one area of need for young people is 'mood management' or filling time for young people.
80% of digital moments is listening to music but there is room for growth
The BBC are seeing where they can grow on which platform and with what content on-demand, live radio and new content. Ben showed some of the podcasts which fulfilled the 4 key areas which are the areas of growth some of the drama podcasts including Tracks, Lore, Wolverine (Marvel). Discovery & explaining (the hear and now news element) including TED talks, This American Live, The Daily. Some examples of pop culture Blue Planet and Peachy Podcast.
"We want to start a converstation with the podcasting community...we are particularly driven by lifting new talent and investing in podcasting" was the final thought for the day from Ben Chapman.
